William Ridgway “Oriental” Demitasse Cup Candle (1830–1854)

This exquisite demitasse cup, crafted by William Ridgway & Co. between 1830 and 1854, represents a remarkable example of early 19th-century English earthenware. Known for its intricate transferware patterns and elegant shapes, William Ridgway’s pottery was celebrated for bringing fine artistry to everyday tableware. The “Oriental” design, inspired by the fascination with Eastern motifs during the Victorian era, reflects Britain’s growing trade and cultural exchange with Asia — a hallmark of the period’s aesthetic curiosity.

Each cup, with its detailed imagery and graceful form, carries nearly two centuries of history. Once part of a refined tea service, it now takes on a new life as a hand-poured candle — a blend of English tradition and modern warmth.

Each has been filled with 2.64 oz of all-natural soy wax, capturing the spirit of tea time in both form and fragrance.

Dimensions:

  • Cup: 3.5" wide (with handle) × 2 1/8" tall
  • Saucer (optional): 4.5" wide

Scent: High Tea

  • Top Notes: Bergamot, Lemon
  • Middle Notes: Black Tea, Lavender
  • Base Notes: Amber, Musk

The scent evokes an afternoon tea ritual — bright citrus and aromatic tea leaves layered with soft florals and grounding amber. Together, they create a refined and calming fragrance that pays homage to the vessel’s heritage.

Each cup is sold individually, with the saucer available as an optional add-on for those who wish to complete the set.

*Please note: As pieces dating back to the early 1800s, gentle wear, subtle crazing, or age marks may be present — traces of their long and storied past that only enhance their authenticity and beauty.
