Westmoreland “Elite” Early American Pattern Glass Sugar Jar Candle
This antique sugar jar was produced by the Westmoreland Glass Company, a distinguished American glass manufacturer founded in 1889 in Grapeville, Pennsylvania. The piece features the elegant “Elite” pattern, part of the broader tradition of Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG) — a style that flourished from the late 19th to early 20th century.
EAPG emerged during a period when advances in pressed glass manufacturing made decorative glassware more accessible to American households. Intricate patterns, geometric motifs, and richly textured surfaces became hallmarks of the era, allowing everyday functional objects to carry remarkable visual detail. The “Elite” pattern reflects this aesthetic beautifully, with its layered relief work designed to catch, refract, and play with light.
Originally intended for storing sugar on the dining table or sideboard, jars like this were staples of domestic entertaining. Their lidded form preserved contents while also serving as decorative accents within the home. Pieces of EAPG were often proudly displayed, admired for their craftsmanship and luminous presence.
Now thoughtfully repurposed, this antique sugar jar has been transformed into a candle, blending historic American glass artistry with modern ritual. When lit, the flame glows softly through the patterned glass, accentuating its intricate detailing. Once the candle has burned through, the vessel can enjoy a continued second life as a vanity jar, trinket holder, or decorative keepsake.
