Swans in the Rushes

Vintage Westmoreland Swans in the Rushes Milk Glass Match Holder

This charming vintage white milk glass match holder features the beautifully detailed Swans in the Rushes design by Westmoreland Glass Company. Three graceful swans encircle the vessel, their elegantly curved necks forming sculptural handles, while their delicately textured wings rest against a backdrop of raised cattails and marsh grasses. A softly scalloped rim and glossy opaque white finish complete its romantic silhouette, giving the piece a timeless elegance reminiscent of traditional decorative glassware.

The design belongs to Westmoreland's Swan & Cattails pattern, also known as Swans in the Rushes or Three Swans. Established in Grapeville, Pennsylvania, in 1889, the Westmoreland Specialty Company became known for its beautifully detailed pressed glass and later its extensive production of milk glass. The company's Swan & Cattails design dates back to the early 20th century and was produced in several decorative and tableware forms. The distinctive three-swan toothpick holder became a charming collectible, reflecting the enduring popularity of nature-inspired motifs in American glassmaking.

Originally designed as a decorative toothpick holder, this vintage milk glass piece has been thoughtfully repurposed into a matchstick holder, preserving its delicate swan detailing while giving it a beautiful and functional second life.

A convenient match striker has been added to the underside of the vessel, allowing matches to be struck directly against the bottom. Both decorative and practical, this petite piece makes a lovely companion to your favorite candle, adding a touch of vintage charm to everyday rituals.

Dimensions:

Approximately 2.25" tall × 2⅛" wide (excluding sculpted swans)

Its petite proportions make it a lovely accent for a mantel, coffee table, bedside table, or thoughtfully styled shelf. The sculptural swans, delicate cattail detailing, and luminous milk glass make it just as beautiful on display as it is functional.
